Hobby or Business? Why It Matters.
Hobby or Business? Why It
Matters.
Millions
of Americans have hobbies such as sewing, woodworking, fishing, gardening,
stamp and coin collecting, but when that hobby starts to turn a profit, it
might just be considered a business by the IRS.
Definition of a Hobby vs a Business
The IRS
defines a hobby as an activity that is not pursued for profit. A business, on
the other hand, is an activity that is carried out with the reasonable
expectation of earning a profit.
The tax
considerations are different for each activity so it's important for taxpayers
to determine whether an activity is engaged in for profit as a business or is
just a hobby for personal enjoyment.
Of course,
you must report and pay tax on income from almost all sources, including
hobbies. But when it comes to deductions such as expenses and losses, the two
activities differ in their tax implications.

Octoberfest
On our way home from Bakersfield we stopped at the Murray Family Farms off of State Route 58. These pumpkins caught my eye and I couldn't resist taking a photo with my Droid.

3x3 Mini Cards
Last year I participated in a 3x3 card swap hosted by Sacha Wilson and I received so many cute little cards that I decided to sign up for 2 spots this year. These cards are great as gift tags or small thank you notes when full size cards seem too formal.

Another Folded Card
I managed to salvage this card after scoring it in all the wrong places. I used scraps from the last folded card and Kristina Werner's Silhouette file again. You can click on her website for (the correct) scoring and folding instructions.

Folded Card
I CASEd this card off of Kristina Werner's website. She has a 16 minute step-by-step video that you can watch if you're interested in the instructions. I also used her awesome Silhouette file for the text. Thanks Kristina!

Oldies But Goodies
I'm participating in a recycled card swap this month so I went through my stash and found these oldies but goodies. Some of these date back +5 yrs, some were done by me, some by others (i.e., Marsha Lotze and Beverly Swilley) and all use Stampin' Up! products. Thanks ladies! Can't wait to see what I get.
